چکیده

The radius of gyration of a polymer chain immersed in a low molecular weight solvent is known to vary monotonically with the solvent quality. Here, we consider the behavior of a chain immersed in a high molecular weight solvent (polymer melt). Unsurprisingly, we find that, as the incompatibility between the chain and the polymer melt is increased, the two limiting conformations of the chain are the ideal random coil (R ≃ aN1/2) and the dense globule (R ≃ aN1/3). We show, however, that between these two limits the radius of gyration of the chain presents a hysteretic behavior .

Phase-Destabilization Mechanism of Polymer-Modified Bitumens in Quiescent Annealing

Bitumen as a binder in coating and insulating materials is modified with polymers to improve its performance in service conditions. Almost all polymers are incompatible with bitumen, and at high temperatures due to relatively very low viscosity of the bitumen phase, are separated from it. These lead to a considerable limitation in the use and handling of polymer-modified bitumens. An understand...

Single-molecule study on polymer diffusion in a melt state: effect of chain topology.

We report a new methodology for studying diffusion of individual polymer chains in a melt state, with special emphasis on the effect of chain topology. A perylene diimide fluorophore was incorporated into the linear and cyclic poly(THF)s, and real-time diffusion behavior of individual chains in a melt of linear poly(THF) was measured by means of a single-molecule fluorescence imaging technique....

Effects of Thymolphthalein on Thermo-Oxidative Stability of High Density Polyethylene in Melt and Solid States

The present work aimed to evaluate capability of a new molecular structure to stabilize polyethylene against thermal oxidation. Hence, effects of 3,3-bis(4-hydroxy-2-methyl-5-propan-2-ylphenyl)-2-benzofuran-1-one (thymolphthalein) on thermo-oxidative stability of high density polyethylene (HDPE) in both solid and melt states were investigated and compared with those of SONGNOX 1010, a comme...

The role of polymer melt viscoelastic network behavior in lithium ion transport for PEO meltrLiClO SPEs: the ‘‘wet gel’’ model

Ž . Ž . Earlier light scattering studies revealed that melts of the electrolyte polymer poly ethylene oxide PEO were not homogeneous but were instead structured and behaved as elastic PEO networks. We report the results of subsequent viscometry measurements that provide a more complete picture of PEO melt structure and dynamic behavior. We find that PEO melts behave as ‘‘wet gels,’’ i.e., they ...

Stabilizing grafted colloids in a polymer melt: favorable enthalpic interactions

The interactions between spherical colloids covered with end-grafted polymers (brushes) immersed in a polymer melt are studied theoretically. We show that attractive enthalpic interactions between the two polymer species, characterized by a negative Flory parameter (chi<0), can stabilize the colloidal dispersion. The stabilizing mechanism is a result of a structural change from a dry brush, whe...
